Spain – One, Great, Free
Spanish poster depicting a triumphant Falangist soldier standing atop a bloodied Marxist beast. The Falange Española (Spanish Phalanx) is a fascist political organization founded on October 29, 1933 by José Antonio Primo de Rivera, taking its name from the heavy infantry formations of ancient Greece. It promoted the revival of the Spanish Empire and called for a national syndicalist economy. Being anti-communist, anti-democratic and anti-liberal, their red-black color scheme can be interpreted as a tribute to their economically syndicalist roots. The Spanish Phalanx merged with the Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional-Sindicalista (JONS) to form the FET y de las JONS and played an important role in the civil war between 1936 and 1939 against the Republicans. Primo de Rivera and his Falangists were considered the more radical faction within Caudillo Francisco Franco’s government.
This poster was issued by the Jefatura Nacional de Prensa y Propaganda (National Press and Propaganda Headquarters) as visible on the bottom-left of the poster. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, nationalist forces seized many newspapers, publishing houses and rotary presses belonging to those considered hostile which all ultimately came under the control of the National Press and Propaganda Delegation. With the formation of Franco’s first government in January 1938, the National Press and Propaganda Delegation responsible for publishing this poster became part of the state administration and was placed under the Ministry of the Interior under Ramón Serrano Suñer. This meant merging the National Delegation for Press and Propaganda with its Falangist counterparts into a single entity. The Delegation was thereafter split with a General Directorate of Propaganda headed by Dionisio Ridruejo and a General Directorate of the Press headed by José Antonio Giménez-Arnau.
